Austria + Swiss -Itinerary Day 1 Arrival in Vienna and private transfer from Airport to your hotel in city center and day at leisure. In evening Enjoy a royal package with a self-guided audio Schonbrunn Palace walking tour followed by a three course dinner at Cafe-Restaurant Residenz. Within walking distance from the main entrance to Schonbrunn Palace and the Cafe-Restaurant Residenz lies the Orangery Schonbrunn where a concert of classical music with works by Mozart and Strauss will complete your evening. Departure Time: Dinner begins at strictly 6:30pm, and concert doors open at 8:00pm for 8:30pm start. We recommend taking the self-guided walking tour before your Schonbrunn Palace dinner and concert to appreciate the complete Schonbrunn Palace experience. Day 2 Day to enjoy For the best introduction to the beautiful city of Vienna, tour the sights by coach and boat. Afternoon tour starts with a panoramic tour of Salzburg which will provide you with an opportunity to see the as many historical and cultural highlights as possible in the city where Mozart was born. Then you experience the breathtaking beauty of one of Austria’s most beautiful regions – the Lake District just beyond the gates of Salzburg. Your tour will commence from Mirabell Square and take you through Mozarteum, the new part of the City, then continue to Mozart’s Residence. Continue over the Staatsbrucke into the baroque Old Town with its resplendent Dome and the festival quarter. Passing the Nonnberg Abbey you will see Castle Leopoldskron, used as the von Trapp family home in the film, “Sound of Music”. The tour will then return to Mirabell Square where the lake and mountains tour will commence with a scenic view of Salzburg. You will be introduced to many scenic and historical landmarks on the way to the beautiful Lake District, such as the impressive hunting castle Fuschl, today a luxury hotel, where the Prince Archbishops spent many seasons. Start the morning with a tour through the Bavarian mountains and visit the 450-year old Salt Mines before spending the afternoon discovering the film locations of the Sound of Music. Bavarian Mountains and Salt Mines On leaving Salzburg the journey takes us along the King’s Lake river to the picturesque Alpenstrasse. Upon arrival at the mines slip into traditional miners’ clothes and enter the mines to hear historical and legendary tales of the fascinating underground world. Using the same slides as hundreds of miners before, descend to the grottos, the magical world beneath the surface of the earth. Duration: 8 hours Departure Time: 8:45am Overnight in Salzburg. Day 5 Day to Visit Kehlsteinhaus, better known as Hitler’s retreat, the Eagles Nest, on this day trip to Bavaria. Journey through spectacular scenery along the Konigsee River Valley and the Bavarian Alps, before arriving at Obersalzberg. A special kind of adventure awaits you on this excursion to Bavaria – Berchtesgaden. Once you pass the hunting castle, Hellbrunn, you will cross the Austrian-Bavarian border. Continue through the fairytale scenery, along the Konigsee River Valley, through the Bavarian mountains spotted with romantic farmhouses. Once the tour reaches Obersalzberg the mountain housing, the elevator will take you to Eagle’s Nest, so that the highlight of your journey begins. You will be transported to Eagle’s Nest by both elevator and bus. The adventurous bus ride along the steep rock walls and deep gorges takes about 20 minutes and provides breathtaking views across the Alps. The buses are equipped with special engines and brakes to enable them to safely transport you through such treacherous terrain. During the journey you will have a splendid view up to the “Hoher Goll” and across the snowcapped peaks of the Bavarian Mountains. From the 365 foot (111 meter) elevator you will enter Eagle’s Nest at an altitude of 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), where you will be able to see the place where Hitler once lived and held meetings with the former Nazi party. Day 7 Day to Immerse yourself in a world of mountains and valleys, alpine lakes and meadows, waterfalls, gorges, caves and fascinating scenic reserves on a guided coach tour to Heidiland. Your full day tour includes a city tour of Zurich, Rapperswil’s Old Town, the Toggenberg region and Liechtenstein Principality.After first doing a city tour of Zurich we follow Lake Zurich to Rapperswil, the city of roses. We visit the picturesque Old Town and its medieval castle; you will also have some time at leisure here. Then after crossing the Ricken Pass with its panoramic views of the Alps we reach the lovely Toggenberg region whose pretty hill and valley scenery is perfect chocolate box material! In Vaduz, the capital of the tiny Principality of Liechtenstein you will have more time at leisure. A visit to the Post Office is recommended; the famous stamps from this tiny state are coveted worldwide by philatelists and amateur stamp lovers alike. And finally we arrive at Maienfeld, the setting for the Heidi stories. In the summer months we can visit Heidi’s village. A pleasant short walk leads to a collection of typical mountain houses, a village shop, and of course lots of little goats. Entry into the authentic Heidi House is optional. A beautiful trip back to Zurich along the banks of Lake Walen, guarded over majestically by the Churfirsten mountain range brings to a close this most nostalgic of Swiss tours. Enjoy the journey to St. Moritz (approx. 3.5 hrs, change trains in Zürich-HB and Chur), one of the most renowned holiday resorts in the world. Chic, elegant and exclusive with a pronouncedly cosmopolitan ambiance, it is situated at 1’856 m (5’624 ft) above sea level, which is in the middle of the lake-dotted landscape of the Upper Engadine. Day 9 St. Moritz – Glacier Express – Zermatt After an early breakfast, you travel from St. Moritz to Zermatt by Glacier Express. A 7 ½ hour journey is lying ahead of you with 219 bridges, 91 tunnels an0d the Oberalp Pass at 2’033 m (6’607 ft). Enjoy a panoramic trip through the Alps in the heart of Switzerland. We suggest that you book a table in the dining car. You arrive in Zermatt in the early evening. This car-free resort is situated at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn. Overnight in Zermatt. Day 10 Zermatt – Gornergrat Today discover a stunning natural paradise The Gornergrat train takes you from Zermatt to the top of the 3’089 m (11’333 ft) Gornergrat. The journey goes through aromatic stone pine and larch forests and across alpine meadows. Experience 29 four-thousand-meter-high mountains covered with snow and ice. In the afternoon you return to the hotel. Overnight in Zermatt. Day 11 Zermatt – Matterhorn-Glacier Paradise Excursion to the Matterhorn glacier paradise – Europe’s highest mountain lift with the most fascinating and highest glacier palace in the world – at 3883 m/12’740 ft. Experience the mystical world below the perpetual ice and visit the highest viewing platform in Europe at the Matterhorn glacier paradise. Overnight in Zermatt. Day 12 Zermatt – Interlaken After breakfast, travel to Interlaken by train (approx. 2 hrs 15 minutes). Experience crystal clear lakes, sparkling streams and fantastic falls, caressed by the sunbeams. The towering trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau stands sentinel over a world of eternal snow. After having checked in at your hotel, the rest of the day is free to explore Interlaken on your own. Overnight in Interlaken. Day 13 Interlaken – Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe After breakfast, you board the train to Kleine Scheidegg via Lauterbrunnen (approx. 1.5 hrs). The famous Jungfrau railway takes you to the highest station in Europe (approx. 1 hrs). A day of fun and excitement is awaiting you in the captivating snow peaks of Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe (3’454 m/11’333 ft). Visit the Ice Cave with its ice formations or else explore the snow on the glacier. You find a range of international restaurants on the Jungfraujoch. Return to Interlaken by train with an optional stopover in Grindelwald (approx. 2.5 hrs). Overnight in Interlaken. Day 14 Interlaken – Luzern (Lucerne) After breakfast, the morning is free to explore Interlaken on your own. In the afternoon, proceed to Luzern by panoramic train over the Brünig Pass (approx. 2 hrs). Overnight in Luzern. Day 15 Luzern – Mount Titlis Today, travel by train to Engelberg (approx. 1 hrs), which is just an hour away. Experience the world’s first revolving cable car that takes you to the top of Switzerland’s highest vantage point with a breathtaking 360 degree view (approx. 45 mins). Spend some time in the snow with your snow disc. In the evening you return to Luzern (approx. 2 hrs). Overnight in Luzern. Day 16 Luzern – Geneva Today you are free to discover Luzern on your own. Visit the 700 years-old wooden Chapel Bridge, the Lion Monument and the shopping malls. In the afternoon proceed to Geneva by train (approx. 3 hrs). Overnight in Geneva. Day 17 Geneva – Depart for the onward journey After breakfast, you either proceed to the airport for your onward flight or else continue your stay in Switzerland at your own request.
